BLOMHA offers two $1,000 Scholarships

Applications must be submitted by June 1 each year. The successful applicants will be announced at the Annual General Meeting in late June. The scholarship recipients will be selected, and subsequently the monies will be awarded directly to the recipients, pending review and verification of all applications.

The Russell Tidball Memorial Scholarship

The Russell Tidball Memorial Scholarship was initiated in 1998 in honour of Russell Tidball who triumphed over many physical challenges to meet his two main goals - to attend high school and play hockey. Russell's courage, perseverance and tenacity during his life to achieve his goals are inspirational, not only to scholarship candidates, but to everyone in BLOMHA.

Russell was born in 1981 with a heart defect that required numerous surgeries in the following years. Having always wanted to play hockey, finally at nine years of age Russell was able to start in BLOMHA House League as a goalie.

In 1994 Russell underwent heart surgery and sustained brain damage that required a year in rehabilitation facilities. It was during his recovery that Russell set his sights on his two main goals, to attend high school and to play hockey again.

As testament to having achieved his goals, Russell was given the Neale Pyefinch Award in 1996 for the most improved player in the Bantam division, and in 1997 he received the student award for achieving the highest marks in Grade 10 English. Sadly on December 29, 1997, Russell succumbed to a fatal heart attack. It is with great respect and admiration for a short life lived so courageously that this scholarship is awarded to individuals who share Russell's two passions - education and hockey.

BLOMHA Volunteer Scholarship

The BLOMHA Volunteer Scholarship is available to the son or daughter of an active BLOMHA volunteer. Candidates must be enrolled or in the process of enrolling in a post-secondary institution.
