Volunteer Awards

Recognition achieved in professional hockey leagues is largely given based on tangible achievements like scoring titles or season shut-outs. Players' and coaches' stats are well-publicized and hockey fans are aware of them even if they don't pertain to their favourite team!

While the achievements of our volunteers in BLOMHA do not pale in comparison, they are largely intangible and immeasurable. After all, how can you measure the pride a coach feels when a player says they're having fun? In our Association the achievements, big or small, of so many people are only truly felt by a few.

So it is in recognizing individual volunteers each year, that we endeavour to bring attention to the achievements of a few, to the many parents, players and other volunteers who together make our Association successful.

Memorial Awards

BLOMHA has established these memorial awards to commemorate the contribution, dedication and love of the sport these players and volunteers displayed during their time with the Association. Each year, players are nominated by their coaches for consideration as recipients of these awards. The names are given to the House League Convening Committee through the division convenors for final selection.

< Reg Hennessey Memorial Trophy

The Reg Hennessey Memorial Trophy is awarded in the Midget division to the Most Valuable Player. Reg dedicated his time as a head coach in the Minor Novice division for about six years, even though he had no children of his own playing at the time. Once his son was old enough, Reg again took a position as head coach, this time for his son's team.

Reg was a very valuable asset to the Association, had many good friends in BLOMHA, and was well-respected by his peers and players. In his early 40s, at a much too young age, Reg passed away from leukemia.

Joe Mannella Memorial Trophy >

The Joe Mannella Memorial Trophy is given to the player in the Minor Midget division who best exemplifies the qualities of dedication and sportsmanship in hockey. During Joe's six years as an assistant coach with BLOMHA he exhibited these qualities continually, as a coach and a volunteer. Even when his son was sidelined for an entire season through an injury, Joe continued his duties with the team. His positive attitude and approach earned him the respect of the players and his coaching partners year after year. Sadly, at only 41 years of age, Joe succumbed to a massive heart attack in November 2001.

< Neale Pyefinch Memorial Trophy

The Neale Pyefinch Memorial Trophy is awarded in the Bantam division to the player selected as having improved the most over the season. Neale was first a player in BLOMHA from 1975 to 1981 and subsequently became a coach from 1983 to 1990.

<Christopher Martin Memorial Trophy

The Christopher Martin Memorial Trophy is awarded in the Novice division to the Most Valuable Player over the season.                                                                            

Christopher played with BLOMHA since he was 4 years old…He was not a very big boy and size did not get in his way.  He could go around, under and through pretty much anyone, not to mention had a wicked shot.  Christopher worked hard but he also had fun and you could tell by his rosy cheeks and his cute smile after a game.  Win, lose or draw.

Christopher loved to play hockey, he played with such passion and wore his heart on his sleeve.
